Abington Hero Honored At
Montgomery County Court House Plaza

The Montgomery County Court House Plaza was enhanced yesterday - the official observance of
Veterans Day - as the banner honoring one of Abington's own was unveiled.

Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, Chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners, spoke of the service of Captain Schultz.

A Hometown Heroes banner in honor of Marine Captain Samuel Schultz was dedicated on the Montgomery County Courthouse Plaza in a ceremony attended by the Montgomery County Commissioners, Gold Star Families, and the family of Captain Schultz.

Mr. Kenneth Lawrence, Vice Chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners,
addressed the guests during the unveiling of the banner honoring a
young man who gave his life in service to our country.

"Captain Schultz, 28, grew up in Huntingdon Valley and graduated from Abington Senior High School," stated Mr. John Corcoran, Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety.  "He enrolled in the Navy ROTC program at Penn State and joined the Marine Corps after graduating."

Mr. Joseph Gale, Montgomery County Commissioner, recognized the service of
Captain Schultz to the people of the United States.

"Captain Schultz was one of four Marines killed in a military helicopter crash during a training exercise on April 3rd in Southern California," stated Mr. Corcoran.  "He is the 18th U.S. service member from Montgomery County [to have lost their life] in service to our country since September, 11, 2001, to receive a Hometown Heroes banner."

A rifle salute took place during the ceremony to honor Captain Schultz.  Other Hometown Heroes banners
have been placed at the Montgomery County Court House Plaza to honor those
that have given their lives in service to our country.

Mr. Corcoran explained that Captain Schultz "leaves behind his father, Mitchell;  mother, Julie;  brother, Eric;  and his grandparents, Albert and Phyllis Rosoff."

The three Montgomery County Commissioners, to the right, look on as four members of the
Montgomery County chapter of Gold Star Families laid a wreath at the banner honoring Captain Schultz.

"The unveiling of the banner was preceded by a rifle salute, Taps and a fly-over (seen in the top photograph) by two CH-53 Super Stallion, the [type of] aircraft Captain Shultz flew for the Marines," stated Mr. Corcoran.  "After the unveiling, four members of the Montgomery County chapter of Gold Star Families, Ms. Mary MacFarland, Ms. Rose Corr, Ms. Rhonda Worthington, and Ms. Andi Sibley, laid a wreath."
